Press release ref: appointment of new club president
SALISBURY City FC are very pleased to announce that Lord Jonathan Marland of Odstock has agreed to become the club's president.
He is a former treasurer of the Conservative Party, and was one of the key people involved in Boris Johnson's successful campaign to become Mayor of London.
Lord Jonathan, who was appointed a Life Peer two years ago, is a keen follower of football and is a Southampton FC shareholder with close links to Saints chairman Rupert Lowe - this in particular will result in closer links with the Championship club.
He is a patron of the Stars Appeal, and as well being chairman of Salisbury-based Janspeed, he is also involved in many other organisations after having been a founder director of Lloyd Thompson, which became Jardine Lloyd Thompson the internationally renowned insurance brokers.
Lord Jonathan has lived in Salisbury for the past 23 years, and was one of the candidates for the position of chairman of the Football Association.
New Whites director Andy Rhind-Tutt was instrumental in his involvement.
Lord Jonathan said: "I'm very flattered to be involved with Salisbury City FC, who have been tremendously successful, especially for a city so small.
"It is wonderful to be a part of their development, and in particular I am excited by their plans to progress and encourage youth participation."
Lord Jonathan's involvement will have the immediate effect of ensuring that the Saints will send a first team to Salisbury for tomorrow night's friendly, and it is expected that their first team will play the first 45 minutes, with a reserve side playing the remainder of the game. The match kicks off at 7.45pm.
